Awards granted at PI's Autumn Meeting 2025

In connection with the PI autumn seminar on 19 November 2025, three significant awards were presented for outstanding contributions to the industry and the association. Kari Tuominen, CEO of Andritz Oy, who has had a distinguished career in the forest industry, was awarded the Stenbäck Plaquette, while the association’s Plaquettes of Merit were received by Professor Olli Dahl of Aalto University and Heli Kangas, Development Manager at Valmet.

Stenbäck Plaquette Awarded to Kari Tuominen

Kari Tuominen, who graduated as a Master of Science in Pulp Technology in 1991, has held significant leadership positions during his career, including at Ahlström and AFRY (formerly Pöyry). Since 2014, Kari Tuominen has served as CEO of Andritz Oy and, in this role, has been at the forefront of influencing the transformation process in our field over the past decade. Despite his demanding work, Kari has also been actively involved in PI’s activities, serving for many years as a member of PI’s board from 2010 to 2016. On numerous occasions, Kari has also contributed to the planning of PI’s events.

Association Plaquette of Merit Awarded to Olli Dahl

Professor Olli Dahl began his career at the University of Oulu and has been a professor at Aalto University’s School of Chemical Engineering since 2004. He is known as a pragmatic professional who understands the needs of industry and is widely respected by research colleagues, industry companies, and students alike. Olli Dahl is also a co-founder of the Nordic Biomaterials Group, a company specialising in biomaterials. Alongside his demanding work, Olli has made a significant long-term contribution to the implementation and development of both the previous book series and the ForestBioFacts learning environment.

Association Plaquette of Merit Awarded to Heli Kangas

Dr. Heli Kangas is an internationally respected expert in biomaterials research, whose expertise in areas such as nanomaterials and wood-based textiles is highly sought after. Having spent over 20 years at KCL and VTT, and now working at Valmet, Heli's extensive network spans both academia and the business sector. She is regarded as a well-liked and widely trusted colleague, keynote speaker, panellist, and member of working groups. Alongside her demanding work, Heli has been an active member of PI, serving as a mentor and making a particularly important contribution to the development of the ForestBioFacts learning environment.
