New Scholarship Inspires Young People to Explore the Forest Sector – Incentive Grants Awarded by Finnish Forest Products Engineers' Association to 41 Schools Across Finland

29.5.2026

The renewal of the forest industry requires attracting new talent to the natural sciences and to studies in the field. For the first time, the scholarship fund of the Finnish Forest Products Engineers’ Association is awarding incentive scholarships to upper secondary school students who have excelled in mathematics or chemistry. This spring, more than €15,000 in scholarships will be distributed to upper secondary school students.

The forest industry is undergoing a transformation driven, among other factors, by the increasing emphasis on responsibility and sustainability, the replacement of fossil-based raw materials with renewable wood-based materials, and the utilisation of digitalisation and new technologies such as artificial intelligence.

The aim of the scholarships awarded by the scholarship fund of the Finnish Forest Products Engineers’ Association is to encourage young people to study natural science subjects that are important to the forest industry and to raise awareness of the sector among young people. At the same time, the goal is to strengthen the future talent base in an industry with a growing need for engineering expertise.

“To ensure the sector can renew itself, grow, and drive the creation of new innovations, we need more skilled young people to join us. With incentive scholarships for upper secondary students, we aim to inspire talented students in mathematics and chemistry to explore the study and career opportunities offered by the forest industry,” says Antti Lindqvist, CEO of the Finnish Forest Products Engineers’ Association.

Scholarships are awarded to first- and second-year upper secondary school students, and this year a total of 77 students from around 40 schools across Finland will receive a scholarship. Each scholarship is worth €200, and recipients have been selected by the schools’ teachers. In total, more than €15,000 in scholarships will be distributed. The selection of partner schools has emphasised locations important to the forest industry, as well as schools with a focus on natural sciences. The schools whose students have received scholarships are listed at the end of this release.

The Finnish Forest Products Engineers’ Association (PI) awards approximately €200,000 annually in scholarships and grants for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, research, and internationalisation related to the forest sector. The incentive scholarship for upper secondary students is a new initiative aimed at strengthening the sector’s attractiveness at an early stage. Recipients of other grants will be announced, and the scholarships will be awarded at the PI Scholarship Gala on 29 September 2026.
